The city of Farmington or Tótá (Navajo) has a population of 38,000 people. The Navajo Nation, the Ute Mountain Indian Reservation, the Southern Ute Indian Reservation, Mesa Verde National Park, Chaco Canyon, and several historic pueblo sites including the Aztec Ruins National Monument and Salmon Ruins are all within a fifty mile radius. Major coal mines are operated by BHP fifteen miles southwest of Farmington, and used for the nearby electric power generation at the Four Corners Power Plant. The PNM owned San Juan Generating Station, located fifteen miles due west of Farmington, is the seventh largest coal-fired generating station in the West.
