The Jackpile Mine on Laguna Pueblo near the village of Paguate, in northern New Mexico, was once the largest open-pit uranium mine in the world. The Anaconda Copper Company began mining the site in 1953. Operations ceased in 1982 under Atlantic Richfield Company when the price of uranium dropped and mining became unprofitable.
